Invoices and payments
Voiding, deleting and writing off
What to do with an invoice that is wrong, not needed, or will never be paid.
Delete a draft
A draft that was never sent can be deleted. Click More at the top of the invoice, then Delete draft.
Void a sent invoice
A sent invoice cannot be deleted, because the client has it. Click More, then Void, to cancel it. A void invoice stays in the list, faded, and no longer counts as owed. You can then make a new invoice from the estimate, with the same number.
Write off a bad debt
For money you will never get, for example when a client has gone out of business:
- Open the sent invoice.
- Click Write off as a bad debt . . ., under the invoice lines.
- Check the date in Written off on.
- Type a Note, for example agreed with the accountant.
- Click Write off as a bad debt.
The invoice stops showing as owed, and reminders stop. It still counts as a sale on the date it was sent. If it gets paid after all, click More, then Undo write off.
TipAsk your accountant about any tax relief on bad debts.
